Graduate
The Master of Architecture (M. Arch.) is a professional graduate degree program. You may apply to the program if you have a degree in a field outside architecture, have a pre-professional undergraduate degree in architecture, or have a professional undergraduate degrees in architecture. The graduate program is demanding, allowing you to examine the tensions between evolving forces of modernism and the tangible presence of cultural traditions. You will focus on architectural design in relation to physical changes in the community. Course formats include design studios, lectures, seminars and hands-on encounters with the built environment.Independent study is both encouraged and expected.
Curriculum and Courses
If you do not have a background in architecture, you must complete up to 62 semester hours of background courses, in addition to 36 hours of graduate-level coursework, a sequence that typically takes three years to complete.
If you have a professional degree in architecture from an accredited institution, you must submit a statement of your academic and career goals. The school works to
match these goals with faculty research and teaching strengths. You complete 36 hours of coursework, which usually takes four semesters or less, including 12 hours of core courses, 18 hours of specialized study through
electives and 6 hours of thesis work.
Personal Computer Reqirement: The School of Architecture requires all
second-year students and beyond to obtain a notebook computer. This notebook computer is an integral tool in each student’s architectural education.
In addition to a notebook computer, each student is required to purchase specific software, including modeling and drafting software. ]

Post-Professional Course of Study.
Students with an accredited professional degree in architecture (NAAB
accredited) are required to complete 30 hours of graduate-level course work,
15 hours of which must be at the 7000 level, plus six hours of thesis
research. This course of study is intended for students with professional
degrees in architecture who want to pursue advanced study. Prospective
students must submit a statement of intent detailing academic interests and
career goals. Admission to this course of study depends on the applicant's
ability to communicate study objectives and interests that match the
teaching and research strengths of the school. It is expected that a
full-time graduate student will register for at least nine credit hours per
semester, so this course of study may be completed in four semesters or
fewer, depending on background preparation.]
If you have some background in architecture (a pre-professional degree or coursework in architecture from NAAB accredited institutions), you are evaluated to determine which background courses you need.
If you have an architectural degree from an international institutions, your portfolios and academic work will be evaluated.
You must fulfill the minimum 36 credit hour requirement (with 15 hours at the 7000 level), which generally takes two years to complete.
