All events are free and open to the public.. www.glassellgallery.org

April 8-19, 2013:

Lauren Hegge and Sarah Shearer

Foster Hall – Reception: Friday, April 12 6-8pm

Foster Gallery – 111 Foster Hall LSU Campuses 225-578-5402

YOUR LOSS – An Exhibition by Lauren Hegge

Your Loss presents drawings, photographs, intaglio prints and found-object installations. Drawn from personal and anonymous archives, the works in the exhibition acknowledge natural and unnatural forms of breakdown, exploring individual reactions and attempts to rebuild from the fragments of loss. This is Lauren Hegge’s final show as an MFA candidate at Louisiana State University. She holds a BFA in Photography from Colorado State University and has a bad habit of picking things up off the ground.

Temporal Cycles: Sarah Shearer

Sarah Shearer: Artist Statement – My work has always been inspired by nature and its components of rhythm, repetition, seasons, organic forms, decay, and regeneration. I create prints to convey the essence of life contained in physical forms and bodily cycles, visible on the surface and beyond what the eye can see. Breathing, pulsing, expanding, shrinking, withering, and ovulating, these cycles take form in the prints as vessels, often transforming into hourglass shapes. Using a serial approach, the vessel is re-generated in different ways as a symbol for the body but also to infer the tracking of time, a protective container, the micro, the macro, constriction, expansion, ebb, and flow.

While I reference the human body and organic forms, the resulting prints become more abstract as I record my reaction to the mystery and wonder of the human body in connection to the larger world. The images become alive and move on a two dimensional plane. They emerge from the surface of the paper and give the viewer a sense of wonder and feelings of uncertainty. They slowly grow and expand as they cycle repeatedly through the press, building layer upon layer of imagery and history.

The form and its environment are closely related and often share similar components. This sharing of components emphasizes the idea that we are part of a greater whole, and that the air we breathe into our lungs is the same air that is exhaled and moves between our inner world and the outer world. Thinking about what happens both outside our bodies and within the vessel we call the body.

My process is continually changing and growing as I work with a variety of materials. I continue to reexamine my work and recreate my interpretation of nature. While working with different materials the resulting imagery changes formally but continues to depict my fascination and wonder in the cyclical phenomenon of the human body and the natural world.

April 9-14, 2013:

Tom LaPann: MFA Thesis Exhibition

Glassell Gallery – Reception: Saturday, April 13, 6-8pm

April 17-21, 2013:

Still Noticing – MFA Thesis Exhibition by Roberta Massuch

Glassell Gallery – Reception: Saturday, April 20, 6-8pm

Glassell Gallery – 100 Lafayette Street, Shaw Center 225-389-7180

Gallery Hours Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday-Sunday 12pm-5pm

The work in Roberta Massuch’s thesis exhibition, Still Noticing emerges out of observations on how shifting light in a room affects the perception of everyday objects; reflections and shadows cause relationships to appear between two (or more) surfaces and the spaces in between. She creates sculptural ceramic forms that characterize and condense the ephemeral movement of light and shadow into a frozen moment. Objects, pared down to essential forms, are composed into still lifes; affected by the shadows and reflected colors cast from vibrantly painted walls and blinds. The exhibit also includes drawings on handmade paper, sensitive records of constantly changing moments.

Still Noticing is Roberta Massuch’s final show as an MFA candidate at Louisiana State University’s School of Art & Design. Massuch received her undergraduate degree from Northern Illinois University in 2005, and was awarded the 2009 Jerome Artist Project Grant from Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, MN. Some recent exhibitions include: “Rendered Motives” at Charlie Cummmings Gallery (Florida), and “In the Mix: Contemporary Practices in Ceramics” at Crimson Laurel Gallery, Bakersville, NC. She is an active member of local artist collective, Elevator Projects, presenting work in “Fluxswitch” and the interactive work “dreamfort” at this year’s Surreal Salon at Baton Rouge Gallery.

April 19-26, 2013

Raina Wirta : (un)familiar

Capital Area Corporate Recycling Center (CACRC)

Opening Reception: Friday, April 19th 7-10pm

Gallery hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday – 10am – 2pm (April 22-26)

In Raina Wirta’s exhibition (un)familiar at the CACRC warehouse, she crosses the boundaries of conventional studio practice by combining collage, drawing, and sculpture into a large scale installation. Her work delves into ambiguities of representation and perception by addressing complexities of identity, desire, sexuality, or fetish. Wirta uses found materials such as rubber, plastic, paper, and fabric to construct visual analogies allowing fragments of absence to become viewing windows throughout the exhibition space.

Wirta has also collaborated with fellow colleague and artist, David Contreras on a mural within the warehouse. Together, their imagery represents the dialogue between their separate backgrounds that plays off of misinterpretations of visual language. With bright colors, patterns, and graphic imagery, they reconstruct a new language within their collective ideas and processes.

(un)familiar is the culmination of Raina Wirta’s studies as an MFA candidate in studio art at Louisiana State University. She received her BFA from St. Cloud State University in Saint Cloud, MN. Previously, she was program assistant then resident artist at Franconia Sculpture Park (Franconia, MN). Wirta is co-founder and artistic director of Elevator Projects, an artist collective in Baton Rouge that produce a range of creative events in unoccupied spaces and with other arts organizations in the city.

April 22-26, 2013:

Shelby Prindaville: I Died I Lived: Shaping an Ecological Balance

Foster Hall – Reception: Friday, April 26, 6-8pm

Foster Gallery – 111 Foster Hall LSU Campuses 225-578-5402

Shelby Prindaville’s artwork is centered on the beautiful fragility and resilience, as well as the capacity for destruction, of the natural world. Her watercolor drawings and interactive and figurative sculptures focus on selected local species that accentuate environmental delicacy and charm. This ecologically-focused work in two- and three-dimensional media combines Shelby’s interests in the sciences and art – an interest that extends to her collaboration with LSU Chemistry Professor and 3P CEO John A. Pojman, which has led to the development of the new polymer clay used in her figurative sculptures. Her drawings and interactive and figurative sculptures are installed together to create a full, mediated environment. She wants viewers to interact with her work in a way that demonstrates the joy of contemplative engagement with nature. Shelby is currently an Instructor of Record at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA, and will complete her Masters in Fine Arts from the LSU Painting and Drawing Program in May 2013. She received her Bachelor of Arts in fine arts with a concentration in sculpture from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA in 2008.

April 24-27, 2013:

Paul Callahan and Justine Holzman – MFA/MLA Thesis Exhibitions

Glassell Gallery – Reception: Saturday, April 27, 6-8pm

Glassell Gallery – 100 Lafayette Street, Shaw Center 225-389-7180

Gallery Hours Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday-Sunday 12pm-5pm

Paul Callahan (Master of Fine Arts, Ceramics) and Justine Holzman (Master of Landscape Architecture) will include both collaborative and independent works in this exhibition. In 2011, Paul Callahan and Justine Holzman launched an independent collaborative studio, 7b7d, which explores combining fine arts with design disciplines through process-based making. A sample of their work and research exploring the role of digital technology in making can be viewed at 7b7d.com.

Paul Callahan received an Associate of Applied Science in Visual Communications from Sinclair Community College in 2005. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from Ohio University in 2009. The following year, as a post-bachelor student, Paul attended The University of Alaska Anchorage, in Anchorage, Alaska. In 2013, Paul is expecting to graduate from Louisiana State University with a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics. Paul’s work focuses on functional object making. It touches on both one-of-a-kind, hand-made pieces and works intended to be mass-produced for a larger audience. His strong background in design plays a key roll in his visual vocabulary, without overshadowing the natural beauty of the materials. The works to be exhibited in his Masters of Fine Arts thesis exhibition are built primarily out of wood and clay and will be available for purchase.

Justine Holzman received a Bachelor of Arts in Landscape Architecture from the University of California Berkeley in 2011. Holzman is currently pursuing her Master’s of Landscape Architecture in the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University. Her thesis in Landscape Architecture considers a material centric view of landscape to navigate changing ground at the geologic scale in the Anthropocene, suggesting that it is now time to let go of the idea of nature as the background to humanity’s foreground and embrace the materiality of all things. Holzman is exploring raw materials within ceramics as a diagram for material agency in the larger landscape. Holzman will be exhibiting ceramic works accompanied by hybrid analog and digital drawings.

Located on the first floor of the Shaw Center for the Arts, the Alfred C. Glassell Jr. Exhibition Gallery’s Peter Shire exhibit is titled Serious Fun: Works by Peter Shire. The exhibition – on display January 31-March 24 – will include seven sculptures by Shire including “The Palace at 4 a.m.” (1993) and “Gaijin” (1993), as well as four of Shire’s unique teapots and 20 prints of Shire pieces. more info

Other Peter Shire exhibitions:

For the first time ever, a trio of LSU’s art galleries will join forces to present a three-part retrospective featuring the works of internationally renowned artist and designer Peter Shire.

The LSU Museum of Art, the LSU School of Art’s Alfred C. Glassell Jr. Exhibition Gallery and the LSU Student Union Art Gallery – working with the LSU College of Art & Design and the Department of Interior Design – will each hold respective exhibits as part of a program which presents an overall, in-depth study of Shire’s work over the past four decades.

The entire retrospective is set to run at various lengths between the three venues from Jan. 31 through April 14.

“An exhibition of Shire’s remarkable oeuvre has been long overdue,” said LSU Museum of Art Executive Director Jordana Pomeroy. “We are excited to begin a new era of working on campus-wide collaborative projects among LSU’s art venues.” more info

The Union Art Gallery, located on the second floor of the recently renovated LSU Student Union, will present its Peter Shire exhibit, titled Peter Shire: A World of Geometrics. This exhibition will explore the many talents of the renowned and idiosyncratic designer. Shire’s whimsical, postmodern style defies traditional categorization, incorporating elements of Futurism, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. His often utilitarian sculptures have been exhibited in the United States as well as Italy, France, and Japan. Shire will also be on hand to give an informal tour of the exhibit during an opening reception on Sunday, February 3 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Union Art Gallery’s exhibit will be on display February 3-24. more info

Mysteries: Works by Michael Crespo, Curated by Libby Johnson, an exhibit featuring works created by the late Michael Crespo, a former faculty member of the LSU School of Art, will be on display from Oct. 27 – Dec. 14, 2012 at the Glassell Gallery, located in the Shaw Center for the Arts, 100 Lafayette Street. Admission is free and open to the public.

This collection of oil paintings and works on paper curated by Libby Johnson and on loan from Crespo’s estate features works completed in the last decade of Crespo’s life. Several works have never been shown publicly. An exhibition catalog will accompany the show.

As a painter, Crespo was well known for his powerful, yet sensitive paintings, which were done in a style of fantastic realism characterized by strong contrasts between light and dark. His oil and watercolors are included in many public and private collections throughout the U.S., and his work has graced the covers of magazines and publications, including four best-selling books he published on the fundamentals of painting.

“Michael Crespo was an all-around master,” said Rod Parker, director of the LSU School of Art. “He was disciplined and rigorous as a painter, and understanding as a teacher.”

As a professor, Crespo was beloved for putting his students first and selflessly sharing with them his advice and expertise. He was a member of the faculty of the School of Art for nearly 40 years, serving as director of the school from 1990-96 and as interim director in 2002-03. He delighted in teaching students at every level of the program, and received the university’s Distinguished Faculty Award in 1999 and an endowed Alumni Professorship in 2000.

“He was respected by colleagues from across the university and the wider community, and adored by his students for his patience and generosity of spirit,” Parker said of Crespo.

Born in New Orleans in 1947, Crespo moved to Baton Rouge as a child. He attended LSU and received his bachelor’s degree from the School of Art. He attended graduate school at Queens College, CUNY, and received a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1970, before returning to Baton Rouge and joining the faculty of the School of Art the following year.

Over the next three decades, he established himself as one of the leading southern artists of the day. Among the collections where his work appears are the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the Aquarium of the Americas, both in New Orleans; Hunter Museum of Art in Chattanooga, Tenn.; Nordstrom’s Inc. in Seattle; Taco Bell Corporation corporate headquarters in San Diego; Promus Corporation headquarters in Memphis, Tenn; and the Duke Energy Collection in Houston. His many awards included an artist fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts/Southern Arts Federation and a Visual Arts Fellowship from the Louisiana Division of the Arts.

The exhibit is supported in part by Carl and Susie Blyskal, Nadine C. Russell and members of the G3: Glassell Gallery Group. It is also supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge.

A celebratory reception will be held on Friday, Nov. 2, from 6-8 p.m. at the gallery. Admission is free and open to the public.

Born November 25, 1949 in Baton Rouge Bobby Hausey graduated from Central High School in 1967. Along with his close friends, artists Melody Guichet, Michael Crespo and James Rink, Hausey studied fine arts at Louisiana State University with such notable professors as Edward Pramuk and John Opie. He received his Masters of Fine Arts degree at the University of Pennsylvania studying painting with world renowned artists; Alex Katz, Neil Welliver and Rackstraw Downes.

Hausey taught painting and drawing at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Sam Houston State University, was a visiting Professor at Ohio University, at Southern University, and from 1977 until his demise enjoyed a long and distinguished career as Professor of Art at Louisiana State University. Hausey is represented in many important national collections and is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including a residency at the American Academy in Rome.

Though he achieved distinction in his profession it may be for his gentle creative soul that Robert Hausey is most remembered. From the start Hausey was a reader and dreamer who rode rodeo, sought love and discovered painting as a way of coming to consciousness. His paintings survive.
