SUMMARY:Lineage: Raina Benoit and Christopher Brumfield
DESCRIPTION:Lineage: Raina Benoit and Christopher Brumfield\nLSU alumni Raina Benoit (BA 1999) and Christopher Brumfield (BFA 1998) come together for an exhibit at the LSU School of Art Glassell Gallery. Both artists will present mixed-media work created specifically for the gallery based on themes of resilience and the environment. An opening reception will be held on Thursday\, September 18\, from 6 to 8 p.m.\, and the exhibition will run through October 19\, 2014. The artists will also meet with current LSU students in studios and seminars. \nLineage exhibitions series features LSU School of Art alumni who are out in the art world working and creating post-graduation. The school invites alumni to return to LSU to encourage and inspire current students and show them possibilities for careers after art school. The exhibitions are also an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our alumni. \nA Search for Balance by Raina Benoit\nA 1970s camper truck travels through a metaphysical space\, traversing the familiar and the strange in search of peace\, tranquility\, and love; a world where lace\, pipes\, arteries\, and organs (of both senses of the word) coexist. Inspired by Art Deco\, pattern\, the BP gulf oil spill\, and Louisiana flowers\, A Search for Balance is a multi-media installation examining the complex relationship between man and his environment. Exploring the poetry of the landscape and the Buddhist process of becoming\, the works borrow titles from the five classic elements used once to divide the observational world into the categories: air\, water\, earth\, fire\, and the void. The works interplay between opposites in hopes of revealing the interdependence that both nature and its inhabitants share. This exhibition explores the complexity of Louisiana’s landscape by depicting indigenous flowers combined with the presence of the oil industry in Louisiana: both are dominant cohabitants that share the waterways and define the region. A Search for Balance is a continued study of the relationship between the land\, the human body\, and the ocean.
