SUMMARY:Paula Meijerink\, Paula G. Manship Endowed Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Paula Meijerink\, landscape architect and cofounder of WANTED landscape and associate professor and director of the School of Landscape Architecture at the University of Montreal\, will lecture at the LSU College of Art & Design as part of the Paula G. Manship Endowed Lecture Series at 5 p.m. on Wednesday\, October 22\, 2014\, in the LSU Design Building Auditorium\, room 103. This lecture is free and open to the public. \nOriginally from the Netherlands\, Meijerink has lectured and published internationally. Her engagement with landscape is from a political perspective\, and she sees the act of design as an agent for change—she initiated On Asphalt\, an ongoing effort to inspire cultural change in asphalt spaces as more engaged public landscapes and improved ecological systems. \nMeijerink received her ING degree from Larenstein in the Netherlands. She studied philosophy at the University of Utrecht and received her Master in Landscape Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design. Previously\, Meijerink was a senior designer and principal at Martha Schwartz’s office in Cambridge and an assistant professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. \nIn her lecture\, Meijerink will discuss her recent work at WANTED landscape\, including a project titled Urban Forest\, the transformation of an ordinary\, car-dominated street into an imaginative and imaginary pedestrian environment. An initiative of Montreal’s McCord Museum\, in conjunction with the City of Montreal’s effort to support more engaged public spaces\, Urban Forest sought to broaden the museum’s audience and the visibility of their collection of historic Canadian and Quebec artifacts. \nWANTED landscape offers landscape architectural services for the design and construction of exterior spaces and specializes in solutions for environmental problems. The firm is engaged in fabrication and the research of landscape related topics. The firm’s mission is to improve the social and ecological quality of the environment\, while placing importance on cultural and spatial qualities. WANTED landscape investigates landscape in the midst of contemporary concerns and predicaments where landscape architecture is positioned as a medium through which current ideas are expressed and explored. This position encourages an attitude towards landscape architecture as socially engaged and operating at a political level\, under the hypothesis that landscape is a powerful force in the development of our environment and that landscape architecture is an act of intentional change. Visit w-a-n-t-e-d.com for more information about the firm. \nProfessionals who attend this lecture qualify for Landscape Architecture Continuing Education SystemTM credits through the American Society of Landscape Architects (laces.asla.org).
