Architecture Students Design and Build Solar Pavilion in Old South Baton Rouge
The LSU School of Architecture has partnered with the Center for Planning Excellence, the Baranco Clark YMCA and Baton Rouge Community College to design and build and outdoor solar –powered pavilion. The student project, which also involves landscaping, is located in the YMCA’s yard, adjacent to the YMCA’s playground and field. The pavilion will serve YMCA members and the local community as a shaded spot where after-school and summer activities may be held, including plays and workshops. It will also provide a comfortable place for parents and caregivers to watch children play.
The pavilion was designed by LSU architecture students Steven Armstrong, Marc Berard, Megan Harris and Stacy Palczynski, with the assistance of Associate Professor of Architecture Jim Sullivan. During the spring semester, students met with members of the YMCA to design the pavilion. Construction began at the start of summer and the project is expected to be complete by summer’s end.
