Where I End, We Begin, Angela Dufresne & Mala Iqbal
November 2, 2023 - January 21, 2024
An exhibition of paintings by visiting artists Angela Dufresne and Mala Iqbal will be on view at LSU College of Art & Design’s Glassell Gallery from November 2, 2023 through January 21, 2024. The exhibition, Where I End, We Begin, features collaborative paintings and drawings from both Dufresne and Iqbal as well as members of their close-knit community. Together the works on view reject the modernist ethos of individualist technical mastery to explore the potential of communal, collaborative, and collective expression.
Long-time friends and colleagues Dufresne and Iqbal became life partners after periods of respective turmoil. Their own transformative experiences opened a new line of inquiry: through a dialogue-based, collaborative painting and drawing practice, they alter, destroy, respond, and add to one another’s drawings—and invite others to join them in their practice. After a communal meal, up to eight artists may contribute to one drawing. Further building upon this practice, Dufresne and Iqbal made a series of paintings working concurrently and cumulatively while at MacDowell Colony residency in 2021. This exhibition presents the collective body of work that has emerged through their own relationship and through kinship, from their community and queer family that includes friends, colleagues, fellow activists, artists, and writers over the past five years.
