(Baton Rouge) – The LSU College of Art and Design is pleased to announce that renowned philanthropist and LSU alumnus Alfred C. Glassell Jr., has agreed to underwrite the endowment for a new scholarship for undergraduate students in the School of Art.

The Alfred C. Glassell, Jr. Distinguished Scholarship for the Arts will be among the most prestigious student awards at the University. Its recipients will be selected each year from among the most outstanding applicants to the School of Art.

“The College of Art and Design is most appreciative that once again Mr. Glassell’s generosity and commitment to the Arts and LSU,” said Dean David Cronrath. “This will make a tremendous difference in helping the School of Art attract the best and brightest students to LSU.”

Mr. Glassell’s endowment is just the latest of several gifts the world-class art collector and retired businessman has made to the College of Art and Design. Last year, Glassell gave $200,000 to the School of Art Distinguished Lecture Series fund, which was renamed the Alfred C. Glassell, Jr. Lecture Series in Art.

He also underwrote the cost of bringing the African gold collection to Baton Rouge for the opening of the LSU Museum of Art in the Shaw Center in 2005, and has made generous donations to the College of Art + Design and to the LSU Museum. In recognition of his support, the LSU School of Art Gallery, which fronts Convention Street on the first floor of the Museum, is now named the Alfred C. Glassell Jr. Exhibition Gallery.

“Mr. Glassell is thrilled with how his recent LSU donations have gone to support the arts and the LSU and Baton Rouge Community,” said Michael Robinson, senior director of development for the College of Art+Design. “He is equally excited that he can help bring the best of the next generation of artists to the school he so loves.”
