Israt Jahan is a Doctor of Design candidate and Instructor of Record in the College of Art & Design at Louisiana State University. Her interdisciplinary work integrates architecture, climate resilience, cultural heritage preservation, and community-centered design to address the social and environmental challenges facing vulnerable coastal communities. Her research bridges design, environmental psychology, and climate adaptation to develop innovative strategies for creating resilient, inclusive, and sustainable environments.
Israt holds a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master of Science in Disaster Management. Her previous research includes biomimicry in urban infrastructure, energy-efficient building design, and vertical housing systems for densely populated cities. In Summer 2025, she completed a research internship with LSU’s Coastal Ecosystem Design Studio (CEDS), where she contributed to projects on nature-based solutions, living shorelines, and climate adaptation for vulnerable communities along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Her doctoral research investigates how public space design can foster social integration, belonging, and well-being among climate-displaced populations in receiving communities. By integrating spatial analysis, community engagement, participatory design, and environmental psychology, her work develops design strategies that strengthen climate resilience, social cohesion, and inclusive public spaces. Her research has been recognized with the Best Poster Presentation Award at Louisiana’s Journey to Resilience (LA-SEER) for her poster, Multi-Scale Design Framework for Disaster-Resilient Communities in Coastal Louisiana.
In addition, Israt teaches ID 2770 – Color and Illumination I in the Fall and ID 2410 – Interior Design Lab I in the Spring. With four years of professional experience in architecture and interior design, she integrates industry practice with research to prepare future designers for resilient and human-centered design.
