Clark and Laura Boyce Gallery
104 Julian T. White Hall
The exhibition “Off Season” features selected photographs by multimedia artist and researcher Yves Monnier who is based in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, in Southeastern France. For Monnier, photography is a “process of masking.” He explains, “You can focus on one part of reality with an image” but through accumulation, something more massive comes into view—even if “imperfect and fragile.” His art broadly documents life in the Anthropocene, our current era marked by significant human impact.
Monnier is one of several scholars working on a collaborative project called “Still on the Map!” Coming from diverse backgrounds in urban studies, environmental anthropology, literature, and art, the interdisciplinary research is both poetic and scientific. The “Still on the Map!” team is composed of Jennifer Buyck: Architect and Doctor of Aesthetics, Isabelle Krzywkowski: Professor of General and Comparative Literature, Jean-Paul Thibaud: Sociologist and Doctor of Urban Planning and Development, Nicolas Tixier: Architect DPLG and Doctor, Didier Tallagrand: Visual Artist, Jean-Michel Roux, Matthieu Duperrex: Doctor of Visual Arts and Multimedia Author, Germain Meulemans: Anthropologist and Yves Monnier: Visual Artist and represents a collaboration born within the University-Grenoble-Alpes in partnership with UMR Pacte, UMR Litt&Arts, UMR AAU-Cresson, Ensa Grenoble, Ensa Marseille, and LSU.
