LSU Graphic Design Students Receive Nine 2015 AAF Baton Rouge Student Awards, including Best in Show!

LSU School of Art students received nine 2015 American Advertising Federation of Baton Rouge Student Awards—three gold and six silver, including Best in Show.

The American Advertising Awards, formerly the ADDYs, recognize and reward the creative spirit of excellence in the art of advertising at local, regional, and national levels. Local Baton Rouge award winners were announced at a ceremony held at L’Auberge Casino on February 28, 2015.

The LSU School of Art BFA recruiting material, a project of the LSU Graphic Design Student Office (GDSO), was awarded Best of Show and a Gold Student Award. GDSO provides professional design services for local community organizations and LSU departments, giving graphic design and photography students the opportunity to gain valuable, real-world experience while building their portfolios. GDSO also received a Gold Student Award for the LSU College of Art & Design 2013-14 Annual Report. Silver Student Awards went to three other GDSO projects: the winter 2015 issue of Quad: The LSU College of Art & Design Magazine, which included work from LSU School of Art photography students as well as graphic design students; the LSU School of Art MFA recruiting poster; and The Murals of Allen Hall book design.

Third-year undergraduate graphic design students were honored for individually submitted projects, as well. New Orleans native Victoria Roberts won a Gold Student Award for her Mac Daddy Restaurant logo design. Amy Blacketter, a native of Baton Rouge, received a Silver Student Award for her HIV Awareness Poster. The same poster also won HAART’s 4th Annual HIV Awareness Poster Contest in December 2014, earning Amy a $500 scholarship. The 2015 type calendar, “Design Time for Type,” designed by third-year graphic design students won a silver, as well. Both Blacketter’s poster and the type calendar were projects completed in the applied typography course (ART 4527) taught at LSU by Associate Professor Courtney Barr and Professor Lynne Baggett last fall.

The AAF Student American Advertising Awards Competition, sponsored by the AAF and NationalAd2, is a unique national awards program designed especially for college students. Work entered at the local level can move up to the regional and national judging, just like the work entered by professionals across the country. The three Gold Student Award winners from the LSU School of Art will move to the second tier to be judged at one of the 15 regional levels across the country.
