LSU Graphic Design Students Receive Twenty-Two 2016 AAF Baton Rouge Student Awards
LSU graphic design students received 22 2016 American Advertising Federation of Baton Rouge Student Awards, including three Best in Show, nine Gold, and 10 Silver. The American Advertising Awards, formerly the ADDYs, recognize and reward the creative spirit of excellence in the art of advertising at local, regional, and national levels.
Six of the winning projects were designed by the LSU Graphic Design Student Office (GDSO), including the summer 2015 issue of Quad: The College of Art & Design Magazine, which won Student Best in Show Overall and a Gold award for publication design. Three more publications designed by GDSO won Gold awards in the collateral material/book design category—30 Years of LSU Printmaking, Mexico in New Orleans: A Tale of Two Americas, and Nari Ward Residency—and the brochure for the 2015–16 LSU School of Art season, Fine Lines Thin Places, won a Silver in the collateral material/annual report or brochure category. GDSO provides professional design services for local community organizations and LSU departments, giving students the opportunity to gain valuable, real-world experience while building their portfolios.
Several undergraduate graphic design students were honored for individually submitted projects, as well. Baton Rouge native Brandon Coffee, who graduated in December 2015, won Student Best of Show Overall and a Gold award in the film, video & sound category for Kevin & Burt: A Short Film (his senior project), and Baton Rouge native William Melancon won a Student Best of Show Overall and Gold award in the illustration category for Solar Power, a project completed in Instructor Luisa Restrepo’s digital imaging techniques course (ART 4553). The 2016 type calendar designed by third-year graphic design students won a Silver award, as well. A complete list of LSU graphic design student winners is available below. The AAF Student American Advertising Awards Competition is a unique national awards program designed especially for college students. The winning works entered at the local level can move up to the regional and national judging, just like the work entered by professionals across the country. The 9 Gold award winners from the LSU School of Art will move to the second tier to be judged at one of the 15 regional levels across the country.
